Itinerary
Visit Highclere Castle, Gardens & Egyptian Exhibition
Highclere Castle is instantly recognisable from the smash hit drama Downton Abbey but it has been home to the Carnarvon family since the 17th century. It contains almost 300 rooms and during this unaccompanied visit you will recognise many from the screen.
Enjoy lunch in one of the Castle’s tea rooms or cafe and maybe indulge in a glass of champagne on the front lawn! Afterwards, explore the Castle’s delightful gardens, woodland walks and flower meadow. Grab photos to your heart’s content in this beautiful, famous setting.
Visit Lacock
Many of the Downton Abbey village scenes were filmed in the Cotswolds village of Lacock near Bath. Wander through its medieval streets with cottages made from honey-coloured limestone and pick up a souvenir from the charming shops.

There are a limited number of tickets available on any day and they are divided into different arrival times to improve the flow of visitors. We time our arrival carefully to avoid the most congested periods.
-
We think this is a terrific day trip, especially for Downton Abbey fans, because you get to walk the same garden paths and see the exact rooms where the show/movies were filmed. It’s a real thrill!
-
You will see the main hall, dining room, library, some of the bedrooms which were all regularly used for filming, as well as the former servants’ working rooms and kitchens below stairs (now home to the Egyptian Exhibition). There are approximately 250 rooms in Highclere castle – the family no longer uses many of them.
-
The village scenes were actually filmed in different locations but not in Highclere village itself. As part of our tour we will explore one such village where filming has taken place.
-
All of Galahad Tours’ award-winning day tours run to and from the city of Bath. It takes roughly as long to reach Highclere from Bath as it does from London but many visitors enjoy using the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath as a base.
-
Guides are not allowed to lead visitors around the house – instead you can ask questions of esports who are positioned in each of the rooms. Your private driver-guide will give you commentary en route between Bath, walk with you around the grounds if you wish, and guide you around the village of Lacock.
