Visit Wells
Wells is England’s smallest city and takes its name from the local freshwater springs which ‘well’ up in the grounds of the moated Bishop’s Palace. The glorious Early Gothic Cathedral is considered by many to be the finest in the country. Walk through the historic Marketplace and marvel at the oldest residential street in Europe, which you will have almost to yourself. You have the option of exploring the award winning Bishop’s Palace gardens – a haven of tranquility.
Visit Glastonbury
Glastonbury is a place where ancient folklore and Arthurian legends all merge. A former market town turned New Age hangout full of quirky eclectic shops, where alternative is the norm. Visit the romantic ruined Abbey, reputed to be the burial place of King Arthur and also the legendary birthplace of Christianity in England. Enjoy a stroll through the unique centre, or climb the Tor for breathtaking views.

You’ve heard about the Cotswolds but the county of Somerset, just south of Bath, is still one of England’s best kept secrets. Wells and Glastonbury are two neighbouring yet completely contrasting towns, packed full of colour, surprises, history and legends. Neither town has a train station and big bus tours usually don’t come this far from London or the cruise ships.
-
There is an optional hike up Glastonbury Tor to take in the stunning views. Otherwise, both towns are compact and you should expect flat walks up both main streets, around the Cathedral and Abbey, and the Bishop’s Palace. We go slowly and can always take rests.
